# Fresh Blueberries Can Last for Months – But Only If You Store Them the Right Way

Fresh blueberries are delicious, nutritious, and easy to use in everything from breakfast and baking to smoothies and desserts. The problem is that they often become soft, moldy, or start leaking liquid after only a few days.

With proper storage, however, blueberries can last much longer. In the refrigerator, they may stay fresh for up to a couple of weeks, while frozen blueberries can be preserved for several months without losing too much of their flavor.

## Sort the Blueberries Immediately

As soon as you bring them home, check the entire package. Remove any blueberries that are:

* crushed or split
* unusually soft
* covered with mold
* wet or leaking

A single spoiled berry can quickly affect the others. Carefully remove damaged blueberries before placing the rest in the refrigerator.

## Do Not Wash Them Too Early

A common mistake is washing all the blueberries immediately after buying them. Moisture encourages mold and bacteria to grow, which shortens their shelf life.

For the best results, store blueberries unwashed and rinse them only just before eating or using them.

If you have already washed them, allow them to dry completely. Spread them on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and wait until no moisture remains on their surface.
